Working on a Mac, I use Name Mangler.  It’s commercial software ($19), but I’ve never found a better package for mass renaming.  It’s incredibly fast, has astounding flexibility, and provides a preview before you commit to renaming and an ability to revert the names in case you’re not happy with the results.
