My Yahoogroups adventure...
I mentioned before that I tried to retrieve the message archive for the
EAC group by using PG Offline, but it's restricted to 1000 messages
unless you pay for the full version. Then I tried using the Python
script yahoo-group-archiver... and was successful. However, what I end
up with are thousands of .JSON files, each which represent an individual
message (actually, there are two files for each message so I have twice
as many files as there are messages.) These could potentially be
imported into a database, but it's not a trivial process and I don't
have the patience or motivation to do it.
I also mentioned above that I tried Yahoo's own Download Manager, but it
seemed to ignore my requests. Then, almost two weeks later, I was
surprised to get an email from Yahoo saying that my download was ready!
What I got was a huge zip file containing a complete copy of all posts
and files from all the Yahoogroups I was subscribed to. The messages
were in mbox format, a common email folder format, and I've successfully
imported them into Mozilla Thunderbird.
So, now I have 27,500 email messages, representing everything from the
EAC Yahoogroup since November 8, 1998. This was mostly an academic
exercise for me, to see if I *could* do it. I don't really need this
stuff for myself, but I'd hate to see it vanish from the Internet. If
anyone would like a copy, let me know and I can probably get it to you
via Dropbox or other file sharing service. If anyone can find a
permanent home for this stuff, I'd be happy to help.
