mbox is a lousy format, fragile and very liable to break and corrupt.
There are a few variations that are a bit more sturdy, but the basic
format that Yahoo sent is not one of them. Their mbox files are plain
text, but each message is separated from the next only by the string
"From " - which means that any time that phrase occurs at the beginning
of a line in the body of the message, that message will be split into
two or more disconnected chunks.

My first attempt to import the mbox file into Thunderbird was a disaster
- dozens of broken messages. Then I found a free program that could turn
an mbox into individual message .eml files:

https://www.aid4mail.com/free-mbox-converter

It did a much better job than did Thunderbird, though there were still
some broken messages. I then imported those .eml files into Thunderbird;
I could identify the few broken messages and was able to stitch them
back together with a text editor. So my archive now has most if not all
posts in Thunderbird's less fragile mbox format variation.

Mark, I'll send you a link off-list to my Dropbox so you can download it
if you want. It's a 21 MB zip file with all posts to this list up to
yesterday. If anyone else would like a copy, let me know and I'll send
you the link, too.
