It's real in the sense that you can see that the end of the track does not have exactly zero on both tracks. So it's an artifact in the sense that an absolutely sudden stop to the sound affects the electrical response. And too short of a fadeout also apparently causes one's ear to hear a click or pop. Windows Media Player has generally been quite good at transitions. It plays "The Wall" without any pops, and that doesn't have silence between tracks. I've ripped about 30 CDs now, and this is the first one that had a pop at the end of the track. So I guess, they were careful about ending the tracks at zero in the other music. In theory I could probably fix it in Audacity, keeping "Shine on you crazy diamond" as a separate track - by doing a cross-fade to mono, so both stereo tracks are the same at the end, and then using a tool in Audacity to end it exactly at a zero crossing.
