If you have a 24/192k file and a DAC capable of 24/192k, Colibri streams the music at 24/192k. That same track played through VLC will go to the DAC at whatever bit depth and sample rate the DAC has been set to in the OS (MIDI Setup). I believe the OS takes care of the transcoding. Since there are normally two sets of sample rates in most music collections, those that are a multiples of 44.1K and those that are multiples of 48K, the transcoding is often “ugly” with samples that seldom line up time-wise, leading to nearly everything being interpolated after the first sample.
The app is $4.99 for a lifetime registration entitling you to all upgrades, both major and minor. It’s under active development. And the developer is very responsive to emails with suggestions or questions. It is not open-source, but I’m unconcerned about that (YMMV).
I have no conflicts of interest. I am not a relative or personal friend of the developer. I do not get referral fees, perks, etc. (as you can guess from the link). Nothing about my life improves if someone reading this buys that app.
