My 2 cents...

I think everyone agrees that id3 tags in a FLAC or wav is just a terrible idea.  Id3 tags imo should never be used with those formats.

Also, I am fairly active on Winamp’s forum and I lurk quite a bit on several others like mp3tag or squeezebox, etc, and I have seen numerous threads and posts about id3 tags which somehow found their way into those formats and caused problems.  Often it can be difficult to fix.  I have even downloaded a handful of those two formats myself that had the issue.

Most apps don’t handle it gracefully and even more don’t support it at all.  I am pretty sure mp3tag won’t read or write them, and may even just delete them as improper.

One thing I find annoying about “correct” flac tags is that the ad hoc nature of them leads to some incongruity between fields...

Is it ALBUM ARTIST or ALBUMARTIST?  All caps, no caps or some caps?  Which should be the default written?  And so on.  These things can and do lead to real world effects that change expected behavior between apps.

I have np with the flac format, I used to use it as my lossless one.  I switched so apple gear could use my stuff natively too.  I also find m4a eliminates any common tag confusion, or id3 issues.  I do wish apple supported the bit flipping crc checks, but far from a deal breaker for me.

Probably not the problem it might seem to be as you state.  I am less concerned with playability as I am in understanding tags, how they are applied and where the fit in.

Mp3tag can display the tag format in use for a file. Now, if there are
TWO different sets of tags in a file, I don't know how Mp3tag will
display it.

This whole "issue" seems to me to be highly exaggerated. I deal with
FLAC and mp3 files all the time, and I don't ever remember any program I
use ever having trouble with a FLAC file using the "wrong" tags. I think
it rarely happens, and even if it does, most players and editors can
deal with it. Even if it did, by some unlikely set of circumstances,
happen, there are lots of ways to strip out unwanted tags from audio
files. The actual audio data is never in danger.
