That is why "real" CD players (not ripping, that's entirely different from playing) can do error *concealment* in addition to correction. As long as they can track the spiral of pits and lands, even if they can't correct all the read errors, they can conceal enough of them that you won't notice until the unreadable area is so large that it defeats even the block interleaving. At least that's the theory, and, as we know, everything works in theory... -- m.
