I subscribed by email, and also created a password on the groups.io
website. (I have been subscribed to another groups.io group for almost a
year, and didn't create my password until now.) Once you're subscribed, you
have an account -- you just can't log in until you create a password, but
you can use the email access to the group.
Being able to log in gets you access to the new archive of messages. (The
old Yahoo archive isn't there, but new messages are archived.) There are
some other possibly useful features, too.
However, you do not NEED to be able to log in to the website, so you do not
NEED to create a password. If you are happy with mailings only, that's all
that's necessary.
