I think you're much more likely to get (useful) help if you include your
actual ecasound set-ups, both working and otherwise, so we actually can
see what might be wrong. Ecasound is very powerful, but its language can
be somewhat unforgiving to the absent-minded.

Also, you might consider checking Nama[1] out, which is a DAW-like
abstraction to control the ecasound engine. It's main purpose is for
recording and mixing, but it certainly can output to a soundcard as well, and
effect management is very good.
