sorry, slow responses. I'd like to include this to 2.9.1 (due in 2013).

I think it would be good to add it to ecicpp_add_file_input() though. It's 
used in identical way and only by the ecatools, so risk of breaking other 
stuff is minimal (I can do some testing).
