Unfortunately m4a currently not support and not planned. Ecasound is most 
likely to get this support via libsndfile, but it's not there yet either,

... I have not tried this yet myself, but it should work out-of-the-box 
with ecasound if you build with the libsndfile prerelease (or git master).
