One tip about Atmosphere: while you may find that many of the pads have a more happy or neutral character than scary/horror, you can make any pad creepier by playing a dissonant combination of notes, like a dimished 5th (6 semitones), a minor 9th (13 semitones), or a plain old minor 3rd (3 semitones). If the sound is too muddy because the pad is very thick, simply play one of the notes an octave higher or lower than the other.
