I think it really depends on the style you want to be doing. NYC is not 
for everything. If you're into playing Jazz of every shape, color, 
taste and style you're in the right place. Also some of the more hip 
Latin productions.

However, if you're more at home in the pop world I would think that 
Nashville and Los Angeles are more suited to what you would like to do. 
On the other hand, New York has a lot of live playing opportunities 
(badly paid however!). I have never been to Nashville so I don't know 
about the live situation there, but in LA it's not good. Lots of 
functions and GB stuff, everything else seems to be really underground.

Anyway, use any personal connection that you can get and go to sessions 
and

play

Be prepared to have standards turned around on you, extended by one bar 
every form, harmonic substitutes that every one seems to know but you 
(well, guess why...). It's a tough scene. I didn't like this kind of 
hazing, but then again, maybe that's how they separate the wheat from 
the chaff.

Write a blog on how things are going, I'd be very interested and it's a 
great way of creating a buzz around yourself!
