Fully agreed here Pete.

Also to the original poster - you mentioned that you had no mic or  
pre yet. If you had a set budget to get a mic, pre & analog summing  
box, forget about the summing and spend the full amount on mic and pre.

Also consider hiring a great engineer when you mix it, or mix it in  
an accurate acoustic space if yours isn't, or do both. Doing these  
things will improve your mixes a great degree more in an obvious way  
than the "subtle at best" improvement in using an external summing  
device.
