Recording: in-ear instead of headphones?

Does anyone use in-ear monitoring instead of headphones for mic
recording? I think of getting good in-ear phones (cabled) and get rid
of the big thing on the head and the leakage to the mic (even with
closed headphones).

Are in-ears are comfortable enough, do they deliver a usable sound
quality to get into the right mood even for fragile songs? Do they
provide less leakage? What do singers say to that kind of monitoring
- do they feel more free or more "plugged"?
