My G5 only recognises DVDs on a cold start up after being off for an hour or so

Well I managed to fit my problem into the subject line. If I insert an audio CD into the G5 it always sees it on the desktop. If I put in a DVD in the morning after being off all night it mostly sees the disc. If I put it in after the computer has been on an hour then it hardly ever sees it. I assume I need to get my drive looked at, when I can afford it. I just thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced this.
