Yamaha S90 - anyone know how to work it?

I am going crazy trying to understand the S90. It has a manual that describes the machine in 
great detail, but I am unable to discover some fundamental answers.
I want to configure it to play 3 of the internal voices and an external organ unit.

The voices don't sound the same when I put them in a master to do this, and I am unclear 
about where to select the voices - from Master>Edit, or within the seq/play settings which 
both have independent voices selection dialogues. 

Any help very gratefully received!
