Stereo Files with DAE

HI . I use logic 8 with DAE/ DTDM.

I have one quick question. 

I have universal track mode checked in the audio setup window. Shouldnt that
allow for stereo interleaved files to play on a single stereo dae track in
logic? 

Whats happening is everytime i try and bring in an audiofile it says i must
convert it to split. Then when i drag it onta a track, it is split. If i
drag it from the audio file window and tell it to place the files on
existing tracks, i get 4 files! 

Can anyone explain how this works? is there a wat to have a stereo file show
up on one track?
