Tap Tempo Logic 8

Hi, 

can anybody please tell me, how tap tempo works in logic 8?

I opened Keyboard Shortcuts and gave tap tempo a button on my keyboard.
However Tap Tempo has a dot in front of it.
If I use the button inthe session. No reaction.
