thanks for your advice both of you. In the meantime I have solved the problem by removing Smack, Timeadjuster, Waveshell DAE from the TDM plugin folder, so the setup below is working fine now:

Pro Tools 7.4.2
Pro Tools Accel 2 PCIe
Digidesign 192
ADAT Bridge 24 via legacy port
Motu 828 Mk1 via ADAT into 192
Mac OS 10.5.5
Mac Pro 8 Core 2.8GHZ
10GB RAM
