Re:Sound Quality

Sadly - I am no longer a TDM user and have jumped ship to Logic 8 on  
an 8 Core Big Mac with 10 gig of RAM in the summer (not without long  
nights of worry and stress about the move!).

I haven't had any contribution here for some time but still receive  
the group mail just to see how things are going.

For many years I was a huge fan of this beastly combo. This group  
often had 30 or 40 entries daily!  There was always a discussion  
somewhere about the 2 differences in sound quality ........  my  
memory suggests this was never resolved and that we a had arguments  
for both camps. Perhaps there was no difference?

However ...... I've just finished my first 5.1 score on the new  
system (Logic "naked") ..... recording real orchestra & choral  
elements in other studios then extra soloist musicians here at my  
place + the usual VSL/Kontakt 3 /ESX24 type sampler plugins etc.

Nothing that I worked on in 5.1 during my entire time with Logic/TDM  
comes close to the precision of sound quality in the new Logic 8  
simply working on board the Mac.  I do realise that 5.1 is slightly  
more demanding in terms of phase as you have 6 channels not 2 but I  
should have though this was a good indication. I work on movies using  
huge jigsaw puzzles of audio and midi entailing many many cut an  
paste 5.1 stems ......... my largest track count importing 5.1 mixes  
back in and re-mixing this time would probably be around 30. (that's  
180 channels of audio)

Yet I have many famous friends all hanging onto their Protools rigs.   
Some even as we speak advertise boldly that they run everything on  
Logic and yet I know they still get their engineers to export  
everything as audio to Protools to mix.(but somewhat unfairly Apple  
do have their endorsement) When you talk to the engineers that are  
given the inane task of carrying out these operations ...... they  
tell you that there is NO reason technically ....... simply that the  
mega stars are worried that they might be seen to be acting un- 
professionally ....... "this Logic 8 and a big mac thing is for semi  
- pros" ........ BOLLOCKS ......... it's stable - it rocks.

THE FEAR is that kids in bedrooms all over the world had our fully  
professional wonderful platform delivered in their Chritsmas stocking.

That isn't to say it doesn't work though.  If you need to run both  
large midi and audio sessions, it works ........ the latency thing is  
very copable with ......... not what most expect.

Anyone with £2000 (uk pounds) should seriously consider the  
possibility of running Logic Naked. (...... or at least go somewhere  
and have a test run) It's been a huge catharsis for me ....... my  
eureka moment ......... freedom at last.
