Just chiming in here after silently watching for ages. A year ago I  
bought an 8-core and a Lynx Aurora 16 interface (with PCIe card now).
I still have the Protools rig entirely separate so as I can access  
older projects. I hardly ever switch it on now - only to bounce the  
odd old Logic 7 song across.
Decided to keep it as I'll probably be accessing old songs for a year  
a so - also there is the chance of needing to run off PT sessions for  
some clients.(not happened yet though!)

Logic 8 with the Lynx card works really well and never crashes. It's  
great not having to deal with split stereo files -crashes etc.   
Offline bouncing is a dream. How did I work without that. Core audio  
works fine - loads of cheaper plug-ins. My only analogue FX is the  
Lexicon PCM 96 otherwise all in the box.  Soundwise I think the Lynx  
is probably better than the 192 although to be honest I can't really  
here much difference. I run VSL on separate SATA bus w/pcie card and  
have a Lexicon PCM96 running analogue in/out + various synths,  
compressors, mic preamps etc..

It's a bit of a bore entering latency world but in practice the pro's  
of the new system outweigh the few cons. I am involved with a new  
company (www.productionmusiconline.com) and am now
working with a lot more projects coming in from other musicians. Most  
are using Logic 8 native. For film I really like the way Logic 8  
(native) handles 5.1 surround so that's all (IMHO) a plus on having  
to do surround in Protools.  Just for general speed/workflow, load  
times, lack of crashes, working with loads of different applications  
open is great. I routinely have many apps running at once - all using  
core audio. Peak, Logic, Quicktime, Safari, Mail, iChat (on all day  
long). Switching between them all fine whereas before there was  
always crashes/problems.

Lastly cost. Native plug-ins are cheap! No more need to be tied in  
with expensive Digidesign upgrade paths. Only thing now that remains  
to banish from my system is Waves plug-ins. I have found better  
replacements for almost all of them now. I resent having to pay them  
their blasted WUP thingee every time there's a system change.
