Trying to Step Input, old school, with Step Input Keyboard, Matrix editor, Ultr

Hey Everyone, long time no post

i'm trying to do some old school programming using the Step Input Keyboard, Matrix Editor  and Ultra Beat. 

I'm trying to do this with my ext. keyboard cntrlr instead of having to click on the Step Input Keyboard with a mouse, which is tedious to do. How can i do this? using an ext. cntlr bypasses the Step Input Keyboard. 

I know i can use UB's sequencer but i wanted to try this first.
