Indulge me for a moment.  

Honestly, I found that the Apogee Duet was a bit overpriced for what it has in terms of features.  For that price range it should be a FireWire device. Not to mention that you're more than likely going to want to add their break-out, which is now even more money spent.  I think for that price range, the MOTU Audio Express is more bang for the buck.  It's also a hybrid device.  Which means, you get FireWire and USB ports.  Not mention XLR's, etc, all built in.

I've been investigating a solution for around $500.00, or less, myself.  I try to stay with names I know, like Focusrite, Digidesign,MOTU, RME, etc, etc.  Then I've been concentrating on reputation of each device as well.  So, I recommend that you read up on devices that interest you.  So far, for me, it has been a toss up between Focusrite and MOTU.  That's drilling it down from all the stuff that's available out there.
