the thing that is strange is this: in Logic, as long as you place a gain plugin in the first slot and rebalance your levels below 0 db, you are fine. A 32 bit internal bit rate insures this, so the rule really doesn't add up in current Logic Pro V9.

In fact, you can test this very easily: Grab 4 faders, and add a 1 k tone to each one at -1 db each. Turn them all up to 0db. Your master fader will be overloading. Now, just use a gain plug-in to reduce the level back to -1 db, and you will hear no distortion.

The reason you need to do this with the first slot of the master is because some 3d party plug-ins don't do internal 32 bit math, and they will add distortion.

Easy test to prove the hypothesis.
