If you're willing to use video to add information, why not directly
have the slides in the video. In other words, do the synchronization
before sending to the client. It might not look quite as good as other
ways to display slides, and it's not interactive, but it simplifies a
lot of things.

PS: A tool such as liquidsoap could take the audio and insert the
images as video before sending to icecast, either based on metadata or
external info.
