Bob and other AES members will no doubt be working in acoustically tuned mastering rooms, but I'd hazard a guess that most Jamin users don't have that luxury. There are now a number of self-calibrating monitors on the market that use a measurement microphone and on-board digital EQ to correct bumps and dips in the frequency response of the room they are placed in. However these monitors are like to remain expensive, and have interfaces controlled by proprietary software (uggh!). The extra hardware in these monitors is only there to do a job that a commodity PC could do, and we already have a finely-grained EQ plugin at the heart of Jamin. So I figure if you're using a microphone and some kind of SPL meter to set your reference monitoring level, you might as well analyse the frequency response of the room while you're there. Sort of like doing an impulse response in reverse - instead of sampling an effect you want (live room reverb) you sample an effect you don't want (mastering room non-linearity) and correct for it. This could be in a 'monitor output' section of Jamin or it could be in a standalone Jack application. Obviously you don't want your room correcting EQ to be applied to the mastered audio, only the output which goes to your monitoring system. Cheers!
