    More food for thought.  I tried changing the value of rm to a number
of different things to see if I could see some correlation between the
value and the effect.  I saw no correlation.  I then left it at the
original value and connected to Ardour (not in play mode) a number of
times.  The peak changed randomly.  Lastly, I shut down the output from
Ardour's master out (that I was connecting to JAMin) and, lo-and-behold,
no peak.  It gets the same thing from alsaplayer if alsaplayer is in
play mode.  The first input maxes out then falls but the second one
doesn't peg out.
