Yes. What I'm saying is that Jamin doesn't need to handle it *at all*. 
Just set the number of bands to as many as you think you might need; if 
a user needs fewer bands, connect the different outputs to the same 
output ports in JACK. JACK combines them, and you effectively have a 
smaller number of bands.

(With the advantage that you could have different settings for different 
'sub-bands'. Your crossover could also act as a de-esser, for example.)

Need? No; IMO it should be on a 'roadmap', if there is one. It should be 
lower-priority than providing per-compressor outputs. (Again IMO.)

These options are orthogonal to each other. A mastering engineer, live 
engineer, or desktop user with a DIY 5.1 system (and too much time on 
their hands) might want to use any of the three 'modes' with any of 
those channel combinations / arrangements.
