Is it really wget causing the trouble ?? Sounds more like a problem
with the ethernet driver... ?? What's the chipset ??

If madplay is the only thing writing to /dev/dsp, you could detect
hangups by polling `grep $AUDIO_DEVICE /proc/interrupts`
