 The '--comp' option seems to be underdocumented. At least to me. I says
that the arguemnt is the compression ration which is to be achieved. Does
it mean that with an argument of 10, the new size will be 90% or the
original? or should I give 1.1 for that? Anyway, can anyone make any sense
of this:

$ lame file.mp3 file1.mp3 --comp 1 --quiet
$ lame file.mp3 file1.1.mp3 --comp 1.1 --quiet
$ lame file.mp3 file4.mp3 --comp 4 --quiet
$ lame file.mp3 file10.mp3 --comp 10 --quiet
$ lame file.mp3 file100.mp3 --comp 100 --quiet
$ lame file.mp3 fileres8.mp3 --resample 8 --quiet
$ ls -l file*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 arielk arielk  1302848 May 15 10:52 file100.mp3
-rw-rw-r-- 1 arielk arielk  5178583 May 15 10:51 file10.mp3
-rw-rw-r-- 1 arielk arielk 25849695 May 15 10:51 file1.1.mp3
-rw-rw-r-- 1 arielk arielk 25849695 May 15 10:50 file1.mp3
-rw-rw-r-- 1 arielk arielk 12930316 May 15 10:51 file4.mp3
-rw-rw-r-- 1 arielk arielk  5178502 May 15 10:21 file.mp3
-rw-rw-r-- 1 arielk arielk  1302976 May 15 10:52 fileres8.mp3
It seems that compression rate of 1 actually increases the file size. It's
not what I would except of a 'compression'. So what's going on?

BTW the input file is 22.05 kHz. It seems that the best compression I've
achieved (100) is even better that resampling in 8 kHz. What else does it
do? what is the best way to achieve minimum filesize? I don't care about
quality, as it's a speech file anyway, not music.

P.S. The '-S' option also seems to be underdocumented. The manpage lists
all three option '-S', '--silent' and '--quiet' together, but apparently
they aren't the same. -S isn't totally silent, while the other two seem to.
-S was silent at prior versions of LAME, but as for 3.99.5 it does speak.

P.S.2 Unrelated, I noticed that when I don't give any tag information (e.g.
--ty or --tg), LAME tends to preserve the original tags. I didn't find this
feature anywhere in the docs. Is it a feature I can rely on?

Thanks for any help.
