This results in VBR around 200 kbit/s (more and less depending on the source). While not made of gold, my ears are quite good and I also have decent stereo at home. I do not listen with (expensive) headphones, though. Perhaps if you are one of the folks complaining about jitter in different (expensive) DACs, you might want to worry if lame --preset standard is good enough ... I'm more worried about frikkin' AC hum and electronic warfare from the computer, so getting optical connection to _any_ external DAC instead of noisy analog signal with ground loop helps more than insane quality settings for lame.
