in Debian, we currently apply a couple of patches against the lame 
sources:

I am not sure if all of them have been forwarded to the upstream project 
yet, and I am especially unsure about 07-field-width-fix.patch which 
looks cheesy to me and appears as if it should have got applied reversed 
in the past - or not at all.

Also, the VLC project maintains some patches that may be worth applying:
