Thanks a lot, Mr Hoffmann - nice to see that this community can actually respond!
I got to the old mb search server code from the (wrong location) svn repository by ... searching for it ... and had found this bad, wrong link originally:
http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/browser/search_server/trunk/README
as a result of my search.
The above link and the false information in it is only one year old...
Could somebody please remove it, or put a note in it that it is wrong information - to save other people from losing many hours like I just did?

Development of the search server has been moved to Bitbucket [0] a while
ago, the version from SVN does (as you've experienced) not work with the
latest mmd2 package. The one from Bitbucket should work, though.
