Somewhat similar to that I also think it's sensible to normalize according to how similar catalog numbers are written. That is instead of a series of releases XLP-101 XLP-102 xlp-103 XLP 104 XLP-105 normalize to "XLP-103" (and "XLP-104"). I know that I several time have chosen the catalog number that most conforms to other catalog numbers like that, when there are several versions of the catalog number printed, at least.
