Upgrading to b17 failing

Following the upgrade procedure, upgrading from b16 to b17, I get an error
message and the upgrade does not seem to work. After filling out the form
at http://.../netjuke/installer/installer.php?do=Upgrade+Form, selecting
the "Proceed with Upgrade" button and the "OK" button on the dialogue box
that follows, a dialogue box appears with the message "Problem executing
part of the generated sql. Please try again.{alter table netjuke_userprefs
add batch_type CHAR(3)]". Trying again results in the same message.
I am running Apache and Mysql on a Clarkconnect 1.2 linux box. Anyone know
how I can successfully upgrade?
Should I be able to create a back-up file from the b16 version, install
new b17 version, and import the back-up file into the b17 version?
