This corrected the php error, thanks.

tar seems to work, but zip doesn't (stuff it turns out, isn't installed 
on this box - whoops). in pre 2, on an identically configured box, both 
tar and zip work, so still a step back unfortunately. :(

zip simply shows "batch.php" preparing for download, but never actually 
downloads anything.
