Hmmm, that is an interesting idea, it might be at standard speed but a digital out would be good. I'll take your idea of monitoring data inside the box a bit further later. I think if it is correct that the NVRAM is nothing but data, then the only way to crack the USB link is to either rip apart OpenMG to give up the encryption scheme, or to get the firmware. As the latter seems impossible (burnt into DSP - see Pete's reply, etc) I reckon it would take extreme measures, as were used to crack X-Box. i.e. a belt sander, acid and a fucking good microscope. However, if you can monitor, and understand, activity from the DSP to the subsystems, particularly the drive controls, it might be possible to 'chip' a NetMD so data from the USB gets sent to the subsystems semi-direct to write discs... if raw TOC/ATRAC data can be created. But this is ridiculous, even if this could be done, the replacement chip would cost too much, be too big, not getting the case back on would make it look like shit, and be too scary for mortals to do. Maybe some nutter can build a PCI interface for personal delight!! The parallel port idea is just a way to make a digital occilliscope. The resistor to the monitored line would stop the measurement from draining too much power so as to interfere with operation. The 'hair trigger' transistor is to send a decent signal to the PC. I saw something called sillyscope that i think used this technique. Either that or it used the sound card!!
