Indeed.

Further to my email earlier today, I just managed to get through to
someone at Sony Trade Technical Support in the UK. His assertion
was that PatchWriter should not be necessary in the case where a
user scrambles the EEPROM via test mode (I didn't mention USB at
that point ;) as there is a test mode procedure to reset it (I
have not verified this). Further, he said the software should only
be necessary if the EEPROM ICs on the main board were replaced,
in which case I would have to send the unit off to the official
Sony repair centre at Heathrow, which have the software.

So it sounds like they don't even supply this to dealers, and
(as I suspected before) there may be no legitimate way to get
hold of it.

Perhaps people in other countries might want to try talking to
their local Sony organisation and see if they have better luck.
