irritating bug/mistake/misuse

I have a long standing issue that isn't going away and I'd like to know if I'm the one screwing something up or if it's a bug.

A track is assigned to the Zynaddsubfx dssi (ZASF) plugin as instrument 811 (Dark Strings). When I start playback (a real PITA if recording) instead of Dark Strings I hear this horrible distortion noise. If I leave the track muted and unmute it a good few bars later then usually the problem has gone away, but if I try to click playback back to the beginning (with jack_capture running and recording) then it's there again! I haven't been able to isolate if only Zyn or only Dark-Strings do this.

I have uploaded a single track RG file (bad-strings.rg) in hopes that someone more familiar might spot the cause, I've been running into this on and off and living with it for years.
