   The documentation is old and neglected.  Don't take it too seriously.

   Looks can definitely be deceiving.  There are parts of this code that 
are completely mind-numbing.  Have a look at MappedBufMetaIterator and 
see how your opinion shifts.  Just the name gives me a headache.
