Trying to record wav file using compiled version of sox

Hello all,
I'm trying to record a wav file from a USB audio adapter using a version of sox that I built from the sources.  (To get it to build I had to remove "lpc10" from the SUBDIRS and DIST_SUBDIRS lists in the Makefile).
Using the pre-built binaries, I can type either 

rec -r 96k -c 1 myfile.wav 
or

sox -r 96k -c 1 -d myfile.wav
and it works fine.  But when I try it with the compiled version, I get errors.  I've tried the following and gotten the following errors:
[src]$ ./sox -r 96k -c 1 -d  myfile.wav
.../sox/sox-14.4.1/src/.libs/lt-sox FAIL formats: can't open input file `/dev/dsp': No such file or directory

[src]$ ./sox -r 96k -c 1 /dev/snd/controlC2  myfile.wav
.../sox/sox-14.4.1/src/.libs/lt-sox FAIL formats: can't determine type of file `/dev/snd/controlC2'

[src]$ ./sox -r 96k -c 1 -t alsa /dev/snd myfile.wav
.../sox/sox-14.4.1/src/.libs/lt-sox FAIL formats: no handler for given file type `alsa'

[src]$ ./sox -r 96k -c 1 -t oss /dev/snd myfile.wav
.../sox/sox-14.4.1/src/.libs/lt-sox FAIL formats: can't open input file `/dev/snd': Unable to reset OSS driver.  Possibly accessing an invalid file/device

[src]$ padsp ./sox -r 96k -c 1 -d myfile.wav  # Works, but produces terrible sound quality in recorded file

I have the following kernel modules installed:
snd
snd_pcm
snd_usb_audio
soundcore
The driver controlling the USB audio adapter is /dev/snd/controlC2.  I am running Fedora 20 Linux.
Any help would be much appreciated.
