I'm not trying to do anything scientifically significant - I have no
background knowledge to base it on.  It's just an experiment/learning
exercise.  That being said, I am (pseudo)randomising the tone order and ear
tested.  I am also iterating over the test tones multiple times (I'm up to
45 iterations so far) with breaks in between - each iteration refines the
result (just audible volume) for each frequency.

In another mail you asked about the version of sox I'm using - I have not
tried any other versions and I won't be - you may have seen in mail to
someone else that I have "solved" my issue by fading the generated tones
for 0.05 of a second at each end.  My theory is that the "pops" I was
hearing were simply some hardware in my audio chain reacting to the instant
volume changes.
