speak-freely 7.6a runnable on Linux and *BSD from konvalo.org

Hello,

in case your *nix installation lacks speak-freely programs and you can not
or do not want to compile them from source, feel free to run s-f directly
from /coda/konvalo.org (see http://www.konvalo.org)

The supported platforms include Linux 2.6, FreeBSD 5.x, NetBSD 2
on Intel x86-compatible processors.

The default are full-duplex speak-freely programs. Half-duplex ones are
available as "sfmike-hd" and "sfspeaker-hd".

The programs include an important fix applied to mike.c that avoids audio
input overrun, which otherwise causes various odd effects depending
on the particular audio driver. One of the consequences is the notorious
audio delays.

The patch is available at

It is not tested on Solaris or HPUX, but it is definitely improving
Linux and *BSD behaviour (while using Linux ABI).

More details:

Konvalo.org is a project which provides a full-featured software
environment - directly runnable as a whole or by piece,
independent of the host configuration. No "installation" is needed.

You may compare the concept to the ZeroInstall project (http://0install.org),
though their approach is different.

The only prerequisite for running Konvalo.org is a Coda filesystem client.

If you run Linux 2.6, FreeBSD 5.2 or FreeBSD 5.3 with 4.x compatibility,
you may easily install the convenience Coda client package from
 http://www.konvalo.org/?pagename=Main.Software
otherwise check
 http://www.coda.cs.cmu.edu/

Then at once you can run speak-freely - and over 1500 other programs.
It works on *BSD and with any Linux distribution.

On FreeBSD you may need to explicitely load the Linux ABI kernel module.
Note that you do not need any userspace "Linux compatibility" libraries,
they are ignored, as Konvalo.org provides its own versions, without
collisions with locally installed ones.
