I was the recipient of one of these e-mails. I cannot believe that you
honestly do not understand what is wrong with this situation. I would never
condone any racial slur, but a liar is a liar in any culture and surely you
must understand that this is an email scam founded on a lie.

It is a very different e-mail to send someone to "remind" them: " Just
wanted to let you know that variations on your domain with a .cn or .hk or
various other extensions are now available for sale and perhaps you may be
intereseted in purchasing them to protect them." and the e-mail that these
Shanghai Network people are sending. They are saying that there is
specifically a company that deliberately wants to register that name right
now. That is a lie. This e-mail is being sent by an some automated system
to many many domain name holders and apparently the name of the company that
wants to register the new domain names is always the same company. Imagine
that, one company wants to buy up the chinese version of the domain names
of almost every company out there on the internet. Clearly a lie.

So why is this lie so bad? Not only because it is a lie, but because it is
intended to frighten people into some kind of action and make them spend
money on something that they would not have spent money on, out of fear.
Every company knows when they register a domain name that there are
countless variations available on their domian name. To buy up every
variation would cost a fortune.
Most people do not even try to buy up every variation on their domain name.
Normally you don't have to. Normally honest business people wanting to start
a business of their own want to build their own reputation for their product
and want to use a unique name. Only dishonest people want to to copy a
version of someone else's business name and domain name. It can only be for
dishonest purposes and sadly it is not unusual to find "copies' of a
successful North American product being marketed in China using a very
similar domain name. That is called theft. That is also dishonest just in
case you need that pointed out.

Most people rely not only of the honesty of other business people but also
in thier knowledge that if they infringe on the domain name there can be
legal steps taken. Howver those legal steps are costly and difficult between
countries and time consuming to pursue and in the meantime the dishonest
person can "steal" the business of the honest one for a good long time until
the law stops them.

The Shanghai Network people know all this and know that they are playing on
the fear of the people that they are writing to. They are "THREATENING" them
and expecting the fear of the legal costs and the potential loss of business
in the meantime to make them buy a chinese URL from the SHanghai Network.

So now do you understand? This is not a "warm reminder" this is a lie and
this is a threat. While I appreciate fully how difficult life must be for
so many in China, there must still be an honest way to make a living. We
all work very hard these days, even in the West, to feed our families. I
personally, have no life, I am always working on my little company and to
have such a threat sent to me, with the prospect of all of the legal fees I
am going to have to pay, is hateful and terrifying.
Honest people don't do such things to one another.
