Good does not always mean audiophile quality audio. I use various codecs
for different CPU and network bandwidth reasons. Some of them sound awful
compared to MP3 or RealAudio, but accomplish the task of providing
intelligible voice-quality audio over limited hardware.
______________
Without a doubt; to 350-4kHz sampled at 11kHz giving
an 8 or 12 bits should be all that's necessary to get good voice
data transported, and that allows for a variety of good codecs
that support it. Audiophile quality audio isn't necessary or supported.
I think the existing set of codecs should be left intact. If new ones are
added then a well thought out codec negotiation method that's fairly
transparent to the end user should be implemented. SysAdmins should be able
to limit the codec selection to prevent "stupid user tricks".
__________
I agree to no end.. what the user can do wrong they usually will,
and I'm suggesting only one or two newer version codecs designed
for voice.
