What card do you have?

I've been using an SBAWE and similar cards for years with Speak Freely and 
ALSA for years, and it's a real winner.

Clearly, Get this layer working first, then move on to ESD if you need it. 
I've had good success with the mixer and other tools supplied with the
Linux distros I've used (Red Hat, Mandrake, Slackware, etc.)....
