It should be worth a try. In terms of firewall traversal, it depends
on what the firewall is trying to achieve. If the firewall blocks all
unknown traffic, then you will still need to tell the firewall which
ports to allow. If it blocks incoming packets that are not part of an
established "connection", then the patched version will make it much
easier to interoperate.
It also depends on the quality of the router and if it makes a serious
attempt to track UDP "connections". If it does (as any decent NAT
router should) then the patched version has a much better chance of
working. My guess it is going from a 1% chance to a 90% chance.
Also, it shouldn't be hard to test out the executable of the patched
version as it doesn't require installation of any files, and is just a
.exe that you run (once you unzip it).
as an aside too, here in Australia, schoolboys would make all sorts of
lewd comments about someone saying they "had a rooter"
