sfmike does not seem to transmit audio

I have two redhat 9.0 system, one with intel audion and the other with a
soundblaster live 5.1.

On one system, the mike seems to work great, and I can trasmit just 
fine.  On the other, the sfmike seems to tranmit nothing.

this is very frustrating.

any ideas on why one system would transmit and the outher would be on 
full quieting all the time
