Would this filter out OSC traffic for level meters, scope and freqscope? If
not, you open up any kind of meter, and the OSC-in light goes on
continuously, and becomes useless for troubleshooting user traffic. (Or,
different colors for system messages?)

I'm ok with that as long as you can disable them, and that disabling them
removes the volume synths in the server. (Yeah, I'm a control freak about
that... one reason why I like SC.)
Let's also think carefully about layout and control the height of the
status bar. Laptop screens are wide but not tall. MS Office made a major UI
blunder, going to those hundred-pixel-tall ribbons right at the same time
people were switching from 1280 vertical pixels to 768 in current PC
laptops. Please let's not do that with the IDE status bar.
Maybe move the status bar to the side...? Speculating.
With the current horizontal layout, if the level meters are vertical, you
don't get much detail. If horizontal, you get more detail (and it would
parallel the presumably horizontal volume slider) but then large numbers of
channels would take a lot of vertical space.
